Pakistani cadet wins prestigious ‘Sword of Honour’ at Sandhurst

 
CAMBERLEY: A young Pakistani cadet won the prestigious “Sword of Honour” for overseas cadets at the annual Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst here.Officer Cadet Muhammad Talha Zahid from Pakistan Army attended the academy during 2011/12 along with cadets from well over 30 countries.

“I am the 5th Pakistani cadet to have achieved this honour since Pakistan Military Academy started sending its graduates here. I am thankful to my trainers and my family for all the encouragement they have provided. I am honoured that I was able to win this for Pakistan,” he told Geo News in an interview.

Not only this, Talha Zahid also became the first ever cadet here for a single year to have also won awards in the categories of The Best Student (Best in Over all Academics), the Best in Defence Studies and the Best in International Affairs Studies.

The second Pakistani Officer Cadet was Waleed Bashir whose Regiment was declared the best. He told Geo News: “I am honoured that I was able to attend the prestigious Sandhurst Academy. The experience was brilliant and we were able to meet cadets from all over the world. Every cadet seemed very impressed with the professionalism Pakistan army exhibits. Pakistan’s recognition this year is testimony to the fact that Pakistan Army is one of the best armies in the world.”

His Royal Highness Filed Marshal the Duke of Kent, who was the chief guest for the annual parade said Talha excelled in every area of the training and proved that he was the best cadet for the honour.

Wajid Shamsul Hasan, High Commissioner of Pakistan and Colonel Omer Ahmed Bokhari, Army and Air Adviser attended the commissioning ceremony.Wajid Shamsul Hasan commented: “The commissioned officer has shown how Pakistan has a premium army which is becoming ever more renowned for its high professional caliber and the ethos that it teaches to the young cadets like the ones who have made their country proud here today.”

Waleed Bashir’s parents travelled from Bagh Azad Kashmir especially for this occasion. “We are overjoyed that Pakistan has won the Sword of Honour this year,” they said.

PACPAD: An Android Tablet by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex

You might have already heard by now. Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) has manufactured the (not really) first Android tablet in Pakistan – the PACPAD 1. Not just this product, Pakistan’s air force complex has also launched their own version of a netbook and an e-book reader.

PACPAD is a joint venture between PAC and Chinese manufacturers to boost the local economy and provide low-cost solutions to consumers. These tablets are manufactured at an air force base in Kamra in northern Pakistan.

The product has received mixed reviews. Apart from appreciations to PAC on launching a local product, many have objected on why is PAC making consumer electronics where as it should be defending our air spaces.

We haven’t tried out the PACPAD yet, so can’t really comment on the performance and usability of the tablet. Hoping if Pakistan Air Force would send us a unit so we can bring you videos and more photos of this Android tablet!

UN honors 8 Pakistanis

Geneva: The United Nations honoured the sacrifices of 112 peacekeepers including 8 Pakistanis on annual International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Addressing the ceremony,UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to the sacrifice of 112 peacekeepers including 8 Pakistanis who paid the ultimate price in serving the cause of peace in hot spots around the world last year. 

“Peace, stability and justice – these are timeless goals of peacekeeping, ” he said.

Pakistan s Acting Permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Raza Bashir Tarar, received the Dag Hammarskold Medals on behalf of the families of the awardees from UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon at the ceremony held at UN Headquarters in New York.

 “Today we remember 112 lives cut short. They remind us of the risks of peacekeeping. But today I also want to remember the rewards”, Ban Ki-moon said.

 Pakistan is one the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, with some 10,000 troops. 

The UN General Assembly established the International Day in 2002 to pay tribute to all men and women serving in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage, and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

The 193-member body designated 29 May as the Day, as it was the date in 1948 when the first UN peacekeeping mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), began operations in Palestine.

Pakistan Military to Manufacture Handheld Tablets

Pakistan Military is reportedly in process of developing a handheld tablet, a market dominated by the likes of Apple, Amazon and Samsung, reported Express Tribune the other day.

A rather surprising report said that the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Kamra has started up a new commercial venture with a Chinese company to manufacture smart tablets to strengthen national economy.

It is said that venture may produce several products starting with a computing tablet, a notebook and an eBook reader.

Details suggest that products are initially being marketed in Rawalpindi, but modalities needed to be finalized so it could expand to other cities including Lahore and Karachi.

The competitively priced products, he said, have several benefits because they are being manufactured in Kamra.

“It comes with a joint one-year warranty of PAC and Innavtek. Because PAC is producing it, it will ensure quality. We will also provide backup support,” the official said an official.
