Three Pak companies win Muslim Excellence Award in Turkey

 

Istanbul: Three Pakistan companies– Izhar Construction, Phrma Health Pakistan and Model Steel– won laurels for the country by winning prestigious Muslim Excellence & Competitiveness Corporations’ Award (MECC Award) at a prestigious ceremony held in Istanbul.

The three Pakistani business entities were among the 40 companies from the Islamic countries who won this award at a ceremony held in the presence of presidents of chambers of commerce and industry of Islamic countries as well as top managers of successful organizations from Islamic countries.
The countries recognized for Islamic World appreciation are Azerbaija, Jordan, Turkey, Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Kazkhstan, Tunis, Syria, UAE, Malaysia, Qatar, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
To celebrate this unmatched and marvelous accomplishment of these Pakistani companies, the LCCI President Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, Senior Vice President Kashif Younis Meher and Commissioner MEEC Awards for Pakistan Hasnain Reza Mirza during a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of these companies at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry paid rich tributes to them for earning respect for Pakistan.
The LCCI President Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that it is a great achievement that would go a long way in giving good name to Pakistani companies working around the globe.

The LCCI Senior Vice President Kashif Younis Meher said that these Pakistani companies by winning MEEC Awards have proved that they are second top none. He said that it was a great thing that the MEEC Awards Certificates were handed over by the President of MECC Award Dr. Mohammad Nahavanian, Assistant Secretary General of Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ms Attia Nawazish Ali in the presence of hundreds of businessmen from the Islamic world.

The Chief Executives of Izhar Construction and Pharma Health Pakistan, Yaqoob Tahir Izhar, Khawaja shahzeb Akram and Manager Branding Amir Dar received the appreciation certificates from the LCCI President Irfan Qaiser Sheikh while the LCCI former President Mian Muzaffar ali was also present on the occasion.

In an effort to continue building community blocks, wi-tribe Pakistan shares its latest CSR initiative that is comprised of a partnership with the Islamabad Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA).

The IDCA will be participating in the 1stNational Deaf Cricket Tournament, with 32 Deaf Cricket teams representing different cities throughout Pakistan. wi-tribe is supporting the team members’ uniforms, travel, accommodation and sports kits for two major gaming events, among others.

The team has played one game as hosts in Islamabad and is currently participating in the 2012 National Championship Tournament, being held in Lahore.

Six-legged baby successfully operated in Karachi

 

 KARACHI - A team of doctors on Thursday successfully operated the six-legged boy here and separated his four legs and other extra parts from the body. 
 

As per details, a team of five experienced doctors fought to save the life of the infant born with six legs because of a rare genetic condition. The baby was operated in National Institute of Child Heath (NICH), Karachi.

Head of NICH Jamal Raza said the extra limbs were separated after surgery, adding that the limbs were the result of a genetic disease which would affect only one in a million or more babies.
“It was strange that apparently an abnormal baby with six legs was as normal as other children,” he said. Doctors examined MRI, blood tests, CT scan reports and other test and later took the decision to do surgery which lasted for eight-hours in different phases.
 

The infant was born to the wife of an X-ray technician a week ago.Imran Shaikh, the baby's father who lives in Sukkur, said he was grateful that his son was treated. "We are a poor family. I am thankful to the government and doctors for helping us successful operating my baby," he told reporters.

UN appoints Afridi as Goodwill Ambassador of Anti Drugs and Crime

Islamabad: Pakistan’s most successful one-day international all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of UN for Anti Drugs & Crime by the United Nations.

During his two-year appointment, Afridi will raise public awareness of, and generate support for, UNODC global programmes aimed at drug demand reduction and drug dependence treatment and care.

The star all-rounder said that the appointment by the UN an honour for him. Afridi said that he never used drugs and would try to work hard with the UN in their assignment.

Pakistan’s first biological treatment plant

Majeed Keerio is a small village in the outskirts of Nawabshah, where local residents for the last 700 years have mainly worked as farmers or livestock herders.

A few years ago, through the prime minister’s programme, a drainage system was constructed in the village. Suddenly the village’s narrow streets were lined with open drains that were meant to take away dirty waste water from homes into proper waste water treatment plants. This never happened. Due to mismanagement and corruption, these open drains soon became clogged with plastic bags, over flowing every time it rained and pooling up outside homes.

Fed-up of these pools of stagnant water, a site for countless diseases and dangers, a local NGO decided to take action. Ameen Keryo, is the CEO of Sindhica Reforms Society, and with help from UN Habitat and WWF-Pakistan he set up Pakistan’s first biological waste water treatment plant. A low energy, completely natural water treatment plant, which is in wide use in Australia and Europe, has finally been introduced in Pakistan.

Although, hoping to do good with this treatment plant, Keryo and his teams still face the ire of villagers who complain that drains still get blocked and overflow into their homes. Keryo’s response is that it is not his NGO’s responsibility to clean up the drainage system rather the local government must step in.

Although water is being treated, there is a need for communication with local government and villagers to fix a drainage system that was constructed and left to decay in Majeed Keerio.

In the meantime, Keryo and his team, continue to treat as much waste water as they can from the village into clean water enough to water two acres of farming fields. They have also set the groundwork for 14 more biological treatment plants across Pakistan and hope to have them competed by 2013.
